Are you a motivated and enthusiastic Team Lead capable of leading and managing an Infrastructure Development team? This will involve resourcing, technical solutioning, line management and development of staff and giving the necessary guidance to build a high performing team.
You will be responsible for the design and build-out of the University’s Campus-wide infrastructure (servers, networks, telephony and hosting environments), ensuring that development takes place within the context of a clear technical architecture and roadmap. We expect the team to provide an appropriately skilled and effective contribution to all development projects and requests for change.
To be successful in this role, we believe you will need substantial knowledge of:
current and emerging technology platforms (including server, network, desktop, telephony, AV and mobile environments) and hosting strategies.

Salary on appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, but in exceptional circumstances, appointment higher up the scale may be considered.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of IT Development and Projects
RESPONSIBLE FOR : Systems Engineers and Network Engineers
PURPOSE OF THE POST: To lead the team responsible for the design and development of the University’s Campus-wide infrastructure (servers, networks, telephony and hosting environments), ensuring that development takes place within the context of a clear technical architecture and roadmap, and that the team provides an appropriately skilled and effective contribution to all development projects and requests for change.
Lead and manage the Infrastructure Development Team including resourcing, work prioritisation in consultation with project managers, staff development and management – giving the necessary guidance to build a high performing team.
Conduct regular performance reviews in line with the RGU EPR process with all direct reports and ensure that development plans are in place.
Coach and mentor the team to ensure continuous personal development for the team and delivery of a development resource which meets University needs.
Ensure that direct reports are aware of their contribution to development work, the importance of following agreed processes and to ensure that a culture of risk awareness and quality delivery is embedded in the way in which they operate.
Pro-actively manage the performance and development of the team to ensure that individual, team and department objectives are achieved.
Ensure all members of team are effectively communicated with in terms of wider departmental and RGU issues.
Assume first level responsibility for all informal grievance, discipline and capability issues within the team in accordance with agreed procedures.
Responsible for all aspects of health, safety and welfare for direct reports including risk assessment, audits and inspections as required.
Ensure that the Infrastructure Development Team works with other teams within the Department, with ITS Project Managers, and teams elsewhere within the University effectively and constructively. In particular:
Work in close partnership with project managers to ensure that resource requirements for projects are agreed, scheduled and delivered and consult with the project managers immediately should any situation present a risk to project delivery;
Establish and operate formal engagement with the Operations and Support Team to ensure that development work takes into account support requirements and that effective handover to
operations is managed in a timely manner with appropriate documentation, training, risk and change control.
In conjunction with the Operations and Support Lead, continually review Change Management metrics and contribute to continual improvement of the process championing the need for a robust approach to Change and Release Management of software and systems...(Please see PDF for full Job Description)
Qualifications and Professional Memberships
First Degree Educated to Degree level.
For exceptional candidates, significant working experience and a demonstrable track record will be accepted as an alternative.
Knowledge and Experience
Established general management skills with an ability to manage both direct reports and other staff.
Knowledge of IT infrastructure development techniques and processes.
A substantial knowledge of current and emerging technology platforms (including server, network, desktop, telephony, AV and mobile environments) and hosting strategies.
A substantial knowledge of security, performance and capacity planning in relation to IT Infrastructure environments.
A clear understanding of the importance of delivering to meet key stakeholder requirements.
Demonstrable experience working in an IT Services Development Environment which delivers a range of services, both hardware and software (desktop and business applications).
Significant experience of developing infrastructure services to a large (500+ users) and varied user base.
A track record of successful development against explicit quality, time and cost targets;
Supervisory experience with responsibility. Not necessarily line management responsibility, but
operational supervisory responsibility and accountability for the performance of others.
Qualifications and Professional Memberships
Other Formal qualifications in project management disciplines.
Higher level qualifications in strategic aspects of IT Infrastructure architectures.
Knowledge & Experience
Understanding of the specific challenges in relation to IT Infrastructure development within a Higher Education Environment.
Experience of major infrastructure projects;
Experience of working to formally development processes.
Experience of infrastructure development work in a Higher Education environment.
May be required to work additional hours from time to time, particularly during major upgrades /
implementation and in the case of service incidents.
